Stupidity at the Speed of Light

Facebook does great disservice to intelligent discourse and civility on the the internet.

Bad or hateful information abounds on the internet, especially Facebook.  The more outrageous the assertions, the faster they fly, the harder they are to counteract.

Yes & No, my dear Candy

In voting against NM House Bill 316, a proposal that would outlaw coyote killing contests, we were treated to another "Live Free or Die" moment that we're all supposed to embrace without question.

"'What happens on my private land is my business,' said [Rep.-R] Candy Spence Ezzell, a Republican Roswell rancher." (as reported today on page A4 of the Albuquerque Journal)

Except when it's murder, for example?  Or rape?  Or stockpiling nuclear arms?  Gee, might there be anything else?

Oh, but I forgot: "... the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."  Except when those arms are nuclear arms.  Yup, guess we do accept some infringements.  Not at all the iron-clad, perpetually inviolable, all-or-nothing 'right' that some people argue we have.

Hint, my dear Candy:  Don't argue for or against an absolute principle; but if you do, don't be surprised when your argument is shot down [pun intended] with a single counterexample.  And don't be surprised if there are more counterexamples.

Look Into the Mirror, Folks

Feeling really angry about government gridlock?  Join the crowd.  I finally did.  I'm as disgusted by my 'winning' candidates from last Fall's election as I am with those I didn't vote for.  I want revenge on them all.

There are two easy ways to get that revenge.  Neither involve physical violence.  Sadly, neither would work until you take a long look into the mirror and admit you're part of the problem, not the solution.

Solution #1: Recall elections nationwide.  Let's not wait for the next general election to vote the scoundrels out.  We can start tomorrow.

Solution #2: A 'People's Embargo.'  Refuse service to all members of Congress and the Executive Branch.  Banks wouldn't release funds from their checking accounts.  Credit card companies would refuse charges.  Doctors and hospitals would refuse treatment of all family members.  Stores would refuse any and all purchases.  You get the drift.  Yes, it would work.  Perhaps we can't convince them to relinquish their own salaries, but who'd care if they couldn't spend any of it?  Let them go hungry.  They'd get the message loud and clear — and quickly!

Yes, it would work.  But only if Americans truly want bipartisan collaboration and to see some actual progress in our government.  "Aye, there's the rub," as they say.  Truth is, we all say we want bipartisan solutions.  We just want those solutions to come at the expense of the other side.  We want to 'win' and 'them' to lose.

(That reminds me of an election placard I saw a decade ago.  It simply proclaimed, "Us! Not Them!"  Was it just a joke?  Or are there more idiots out there than even I know about?)

So, admit it: you're not serious about our government 'working' well; you just want everything your way.  Fine! But stop your bitching about it, okay?

Testing, testing, testing...

This is a test of the Emergency Broadcast System.

Well, not really. Actually, this is a test to see how a link to my two "public" blogs might look on Facebook.

I've decided that I need to resume my blogging — sharing my diverse eccentricities here, not on Facebook, where posts longer than a dozen words would be a rarity and generally disregarded anyway.

All together, I have four blogs, but two of them are totally anonymous.  You'll never see me refer to, link to, or quote from either of them, nor to invite you to become a "friend" or fan.  The first is a controversial examination of the emotional and physical aspects of human nature.  The other reflects my belief that fools and idiots abound in this world.  Think of it as a public service, reminding people that average intelligence is not very intelligent at all.  But then, genius sometimes isn't either.
